Nestled amongst some of the world’s most luxurious super-brands in Knightsbridge is Sumosan Twiga, a fully immersive dining experience where the East meets the West.
If you haven’t spotted the three-story venue on Sloane Street then you’ve almost certainly come across it on social media. The ultra-glamorous restaurant has built up somewhat of a cult following, hosting celebrities and “billionaire life’s chic clientele” at this go-to-be-seen spot.
“We fill up the main room every night and it’s highly recommended to book in advance. We have our black book of people – a lot of regulars that will just dial us directly,” says General Manager Romain Rousset.
Launched in 2016, it brings together the critically acclaimed restaurant Sumosan, founded in 1997 in Moscow by the Wolkow family and Formula One tycoon Flavio Briatore’s glamorous Twiga brand who is renowned for his Monaco Twiga restaurant.
Some of the most famous dishes on the Sumosan side include the Black Miso Cod (delish!) and The Sumosan Tartar while on the Twiga side there’s an array of dishes from pasta to risottos to the famous Veal ‘Milanese,’ cooked by authentically-trained chefs.
The Saturday bottomless brunch, which runs from 12 pm – 5 pm, is a good way to indulge it all with four courses, two hours of unlimited champagne and finished with a selection of expertly crafted cocktails.
“Most bottomless these days are prosecco but we are a fine establishment and we thought we want to go with no less than champagne so Veuve Clicquot has partnered with us,” says Rousset.
And everything is to a champagne-style standard from the decor that included herringbone flooring, white tablecloths, green leather chair with wood accents and shelves adorned with coffee table books to the service. Even during our interview with Rousset, he was checking in with staff to ensure everything was running smoothly.
And that’s before you even take a bite of the well-thought-out menu (who knew an Italian Asian fusion could work so well?). Brunch highlights included the Tomato and Mozzarella Gnocchi, the Maki Sushi Roll Selection and Truffle Burrata. The Salmon Tiradito with kumquat, daikon and pickled Aji Amarillo was very citrusy and quite unlike anything I’ve tried in London before – if you’re after something different.
“All the ingredients are fresh and we source them in the UK wherever possible. Of course, there are a few dishes… that we have to source directly from Italian or Japanese producers,” he says.
Before you know it, the lights are dimmed, the disco balls are shining and the music creeps up as the party takes hold. You start swaying in your seat before being drawn to the dancefloor as a percussionist, saxophonist and performers get guests on their feet.
With songs like ‘You’ve Got the Love’ by Florence and The Machine and ‘Gypsy Woman’ by Crystal Waters, the majority female crowd gathered in the center of the room, waving napkins as we danced the afternoon away.
“[The venue] is set over three floors so in the basement we have the nightclub which has historically been very famous… Guests like to come, dine on the main floor, go up in the lounge for cocktails and then go down to the nightclub to dance and drink some particular bottles like Dom Perignon, “ Rousset says.
It’s a party quite like any other and had me confused in the best way possible when I resurfaced onto the street, only to realise it was 5 pm.
Sumosan Twiga is an ultra-glamour dining spot serving up delectable food and a party environment unrivalled for a Saturday brunch. Some upcoming key calendar dates include Halloween and New Year’s Eve but don’t say you haven’t been warned about pre-bookings!
“This year’s going to be bigger than ever – no more restriction, all back to normal,” says Rousset.
It’s pricey at £150pp for the alcohol and £110 for the non-alcoholic packages but with a five-hour service, champagne by the glass, a culinary playground and live performances, it’s worth the splurge. For booking and more information, head to the Sumosan Twiga London website.
