Lebanese cuisine is without a doubt having a resurgence and it is really humble houmous’ time to shine. Like all of us, Massis Lebanese has entered a new era post lockdown and it is absolutely worth a visit
Paddington has gone from strength to strength and along the canal is now considered a fledgling foodie destination. This includes Sheldon Square, the go-to spot for eating and drinking al fresco, where this established Lebanese restaurant is based.
As restrictions lifted, Massis Lebanese unveiled a transformation in both its menu and décor and it does not disappoint. It champions a mezze-focused offering which is best to share and allows guests to explore the extensive options together. Massis also combines the best of traditional Lebanese flavours (done exceptionally well) alongside more contemporary twists. Moreover, it is a perfect option for those with dietary requirements as it offers vegan and gluten-free options without compromising on the key flavours of well-loved Lebanon.
The bar is fully-stocked with any tipple of choice on offer including some unique Massis Special cocktails such as the conversation-starter of the Devils Tongue which includes tequila, fresh strawberries, chili and Crème de Menthe. We started with a Porn Star Martini which was not only delicious but visually-beautiful with edible flowers providing a striking contrast to the passionfruit tang. However, those choosing not to drink are not missing out, with virgin cocktails available to rival any alcoholic choice. We tried the mojito and were not disappointed as it captured the sweet yet sour taste of any holiday abroad.
Food-wise, we opted for traditional Mezze options of hummus and moutabal, a smoked aubergine purée with sesame sauce and pomegranate seed served alongside crispy pita bread. After, we moved onto the falafel which Massis do excellently and can be credited to the rogue but superb addition of a fava bean. The crunch of these worked exceptionally well alongside the fresh tastes of the fattoush salad packed full of minty goodness and the moreish taste of tabouleh. The portions are good-sized and we were full but could not leave without trying the grilled octopus. This is a clear standout option and is served marinated and grilled with a chimichurri sauce and a homemade avocado spinach dip which complemented the freshness of the seafood. We finished this all of with the Lebanese churros which were sweet, sticky and chocolatey and exactly what the doctor ordered!
If you’re looking for a contemporary take on Lebanese cuisine in a fun décor which provides a great transitional spot from buzzy lunch to a dinner that lasts well into the evening then Massis Lebanese is for you! Make sure to grab a spot on the outdoor terrace to best enjoy the buzz of post-lockdown London!
