I love a Moxy. I love their affordable but quirky aesthetic. The warm welcome and the stylish, industrial surroundings. And The Moxy Glasgow SEC did not disappoint.
Conveniently situated right next door to the OVO Hydro, the hotel is just a short walk from the very desirable West End with its amazing arts and food scenes.
The open plan reception features high ceilings and a mix of concrete, funky lighting and murals, providing the perfect space to enjoy the complimentary cocktail – free on arrival to all weary and not-so-weary travellers. A refreshing combo of gin and iced tea, an alcohol-free version is also available for children/teetotallers/crazies embarking on dry January.
It would be very easy to spend the evening immersed in the fun atmosphere of this buzzy reception area. The bar serves a wide selection of beers, spirits and cocktails and if you have one too many IRN-BRUs and forget where you are, the tartan cushions and Glasgow Monopoly give a heavy hint. You can also shoot a game a pool or relive your French camping holidays playing foosball before hitting the town.
The small but perfectly formed bedrooms include all the basics such as a hair dryer, massive telly and handy usb ports by the bed. They dispense with wardrobes but you can hang your clothes on a functional, space saving wall rack. The bed was comfy, the sheets silky soft and the bathroom spotless. I also loved the personal touch of welcome messages scattered throughout the room.
Another thing to note, you can actually open the bedroom windows if, like my travelling companion, you enjoy a blast of fresh air that hasn’t come from a vent. Whether due to location or wall thickness, our room was incredibly quiet and provided the perfect space for a good night’s sleep.
Just off reception you’ll also find a fitness suite which is actually open 24 hours but unfortunately I’d forgotten my trainers. Ah well. Maybe next time… Meanwhile, the restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner with an all-day dining menu – handy if it’s a flying visit into the city and you need food fast! The 24/7 Grab & Go counter provides the basics if you’re rushing out to explore.
I’ll certainly be back for a slice of affordable luxe with a warm Glaswegian welcome always on tap at Moxy Glasgow SEC.
