What Does A Car Need To Turn Heads?
To grab attention in what you’re driving takes something pretty special on our crowded roads. But certain cars will always attract admiring glances, whether for their stunning looks, or simply because they’re a fine example of automotive design.
After the obvious sports car, next on the list of head-turning motors, nominated by one in six people questioned for a survey by an online insurer, were SUVs.
Plenty of SUV drivers will read that and think that’s a bit unfair, because their own experience tells them their cars have the star quality to attract the same attention as a top-of-the-range sports car.
Why Would A Range Rover Attract Admiring Looks?
Any Range Rover driver will tell you that being in the driving seat is one of the best feelings you can have in any car. But a Range Rover looks so imposing not only because of its size, but also these days because they have a reputation for incredible luxury.
The ultimate variants of the Range Rover are the Autobiography models, in which automotive magazine Parkers says “comfort reigns supreme, where driver and passengers are deliberately isolated from the hoi polloi as well as the road”.
That means they benefit from a host of extra Range Rover parts and features. You got as standard, or could choose, among others, privacy glass, air suspension and luxurious armchair-style seats.
If You Can’t Run To A Range Rover, What Other Choices Might You Have?
Jaguar XJ-S
From the same stable, you can’t ignore the Jaguar XJ-S. Something at the opposite pole to the imposing Range Rover, an XJ-S nevertheless has the long bonnet and spacious interior which made it such a hit with many executives of its day.
It meant they could spend their days cruising along the motorway, and at the weekend, pack in their family and all their belongings for a trip to the seaside.
Ferrari 296
OK, we might be stretching the definition of ‘luxury’ here – but just look at it. “The best supercar available today,” according to Top Gear, AND it’s a hybrid? The combined electric and twin-turbo V6 engines produce a mighty 818bhp. “Right now no-one builds a better mid-engined supercar than this”, the TG team even opined.
Thanks to the silent electric engine as you glide around town, you’ll be able to hear the sound of jaws hitting the floor from the other side of the street.
Mercedes S-Class
A contemporary of the Audi, hardly any motorway journey of the early to mid-1990s was complete without the experience of one of these cruising by in the outside lane. The S-Class first appeared in 1972, and is one of the most desirable executive saloons you can drive. ABS, traction control and electrically-adjustable front seats give this a real air of gravitas.
Jaguar XK-8
The F-Type that never was. Built on the same underpinnings as an Aston Martin DB7, the XK-8 came in both coupe and convertible styles. The car proved so popular that, with some engine tweaks, it stayed in production for 10 years, with over 90,000 being built.
More of interest to anyone reading this will be the XK-8 driver who reviewed his car thus: “It’s a beautiful cruiser… the most reliable, worry-free vehicle I ever owned.”
