Billy’s Bothy, Isle of Skye: A Cosy Cabin Stay with Unbeatable Views

We checked in for a luxury Bothy stay on the Isle of Skye.

When planning a trip to Skye, most people naturally base themselves around Portree or Carbost. But just beyond Dunvegan, along the road towards Colbost, sits Billy’s Bothy, a small, beautifully designed cabin that offers something a little more peaceful, and altogether more special.

A Quieter Base on Skye’s West Coast

Set overlooking a sea loch, the location is one of those that makes you stop almost instantly. It’s quiet, completely uninterrupted, and feels a world away from some of the busier parts of the island. We arrived late afternoon and immediately found ourselves just standing there, taking it all in.

It’s also incredibly well located. Dunvegan is a short drive away, with its castle, a handful of good local restaurants and a couple of reliable coffee spots. Head in the other direction and you’ve got Colbost and The Three Chimneys, and a little further on, Glendale, where you’ll find smaller cafés and artisan shops. It’s a slightly less obvious base, but one we’d definitely recommend.

A Cosy Cabin with Everything You Need

The bothy itself is compact, but very well thought through. It has everything you need, without ever feeling cramped. The kitchen is fully equipped, with a proper oven, coffee machine and cafetière, alongside neatly matched crockery that makes even a quick breakfast feel that bit more considered.

The welcome hamper is a highlight. Fresh bread from a local bakery, homemade brownies, marmalade, butter and eggs from the owners’ chickens, which you can actually watch wandering around outside in the morning. There were pastries too, more than enough for our stay, and it all felt like a genuine treat.

Cosy Details and Local Touches

The living space is where we spent most of our time. A small sofa layered with sheepskins and blankets from local makers sits directly facing the view, and with the wood burner on in the evenings, it’s exactly where you want to be after a day out exploring.

The bedroom follows the same feel. A large king-size brass bed with soft linen and a proper, thick duvet, the kind you sink straight into after a long day. The bathroom is equally well done, with a rainfall shower, freestanding bath and locally made products that tie everything back to the island.

Thoughtful hosting that makes the difference

What really makes the stay, though, is the level of thought behind it. Jane, the owner, has clearly put a lot into making it feel special. From the selection of books on local walks and wildlife, to the recommendations she shares ahead of your stay, which are genuinely useful given how quickly places book up on Skye.

She’s nearby if needed, but never intrusive. It’s that balance that makes the whole experience feel easy and relaxed.

Views you won’t get tired of

And then there’s the view. The bothy looks straight out across the Dunvegan sea loch, and the setting changes constantly depending on the light – and weather, of course!

One morning we spotted seals while having breakfast, which felt pretty special, and apparently dolphins make the odd appearance too. It’s one of those places where even a slow morning coffee becomes exciting.

Final Thoughts

In a place like Skye, where it’s easy to spend your days moving from one viewpoint to the next, Billy’s Bothy gives you a reason to slow down and actually enjoy where you are.

Safe to say, we’d go back. Next time, we’d just stay a little longer. Book here.
