Tewinbury Farm Review: A Luxury Countryside Escape Near London

A luxury farm stay in Hertfordshire with lakeside lodges, farm-to-fork dining and all the countryside calmness you could want, less than an hour from London.

Some countryside hotels near London sound dreamy in theory, until you realise you need a car, a full weekend and military-level planning to actually get there. Tewinbury Farm, a luxury countryside hotel in Hertfordshire, is not one of them.

Set across 700 acres of countryside, this working farm, hotel and rural estate feels like the perfect spot to reset, yet it is wonderfully easy to reach from London. We travelled from King’s Cross and were there in around 50 minutes door to door, which made the whole thing feel almost suspiciously easy. One minute we were in London, the next we were crossing fields, spotting sheep and alpacas, and wondering why we don’t do this more often.

Tewinbury has been run by the Williams family since 1931. It is big enough to feel like a proper holiday destination, with everything from restaurants and bars to a farm shop, cookery school, walking routes, animals and even a new gym, but it still has that relaxed, family-run feel. It is the sort of place where you can arrive for a romantic weekend, a family break, a wellness reset or a low-key foodie escape and shape the stay around whatever you are in the mood for.

We stayed in a Lakehouse Lodge

Staying In The Lakeside Lodges At Tewinbury Farm

We stayed in one of the Lakeside Lodges at Tewinbury Farm, tucked slightly away from the main farmhouse buildings and overlooking a small lake. This was our favourite thing about the whole experience. The lodge had all the charm of a countryside hut, but none of the “roughing it” usually implied by the word. Inside, it was spacious, warm and beautifully finished, with a king-size bed, seating area, TV, kitchenette and a huge shower room that felt more boutique hotel than cabin.

The kitchen had a small oven, fridge, kettle and everything needed to cook a simple meal, which we did on the first night, eating outside by the lake with a few drinks and snacks we had brought with us. There were thoughtful touches everywhere too, from local beers and wine to sleep sprays by the bed, little bathroom extras and a map of the estate for wandering.

Outside, there was a private fenced-off area, a little jetty down to the water, outdoor seating and a fire pit ready to go. It felt completely private, which is rare for a hotel stay, and wonderfully peaceful. We spent hours just watching the lake: ducks gliding past, moorhens appearing between the reeds, herons swooping overhead and fish swimming under the surface. It was the kind of stillness you always say you need when you live in London, but very rarely actually give yourself.

The bed was ridiculously comfortable

The Lakeside Bath You Won’t Want To Leave

The best bit, though, was the bath. Attached to the lodge in a semi-indoor, semi-outdoor space was a huge copper tub, big enough for two, which could be filled up whenever you fancied. We used it more times than is probably normal for a two-night stay. One evening it was hot and steamy as the sun went down; the next day, when the weather was roasting, we filled it with cool water and treated it like our own private plunge pool.

Add fluffy robes, a glass of wine, a little radio playing in the background and the fire pit outside, and it all felt incredibly indulgent without trying too hard.

Breakfast At The Cowshed Restaurant

The next morning, breakfast was served at The Cowshed, Tewinbury Farm’s main farm-to-fork restaurant. It sits in a restored former cowshed and has a cosy, contemporary feel: rustic without being twee, polished without feeling stuffy.

Breakfast was generous and brimming with tasty options. There was yoghurt, fruit, homemade muesli, cereals, compotes, jams and fresh bread, including excellent sourdough with that chewy, almost Parisian-style tang that makes you go back for another slice. The hot breakfast offering was equally good, with thick-cut bacon, sausages, mushrooms and scrambled eggs being topped up regularly, so nothing felt like it had been sitting there for hours. The staff were also lovely, which makes such a difference, especially at breakfast, when you are still half-asleep and deciding whether a second plate is acceptable. It was.

Farm-To-Fork Dining That Is Date-Night Worthy

Dinner at The Cowshed was one of the highlights of our Tewinbury Farm stay. The restaurant’s philosophy is very much “yards-not-miles”, with everything seasonal, homemade and led by the farm where possible.

We started with drinks, including a gin and tonic made with Tewinbury’s own gin, which had a lovely clean, London dry-style finish, before moving on to the pea and tarragon arancini with garlic aioli. It was soft and well seasoned, with the tarragon giving it a slightly more grown-up edge.

For mains, we both went for the beef sirloin, served with mustard seed jus. The steak was cooked exactly as asked, with that rich, savoury flavour you hope for when ordering beef somewhere with this kind of farm-to-fork focus. On the side, the triple-cooked chips were crisp, golden and dangerously easy to keep picking at, while the charred hispi with black garlic and crispy shallots turned out to be far more memorable than cabbage usually has any right to be.

To finish, the almond and hazelnut torte with caramelised apple and crème anglaise was exactly the kind of pudding you want at the end of a countryside dinner: nutty, buttery and comforting, with the apple bringing just enough freshness to stop it feeling too heavy.

The steak was cooked perfectly with triple-cooked chips that we would happily inhale all over again!

More Than Just Beautiful Accommodation

What makes Tewinbury Farm work so well is that there is more to it than simply checking into a lovely room and having dinner. Across the estate, there is a real sense of buzz. The Granary Kitchen offers a more casual option for brunches, lunches and lighter bites, while the Courtyard has pizza, drinks and games, making it perfect for an easy evening if you want something more relaxed. There is also The Stable Bar with regular live music and a fantastic wine selection, plus plenty of outdoor space to wander and farm animals to say hello to.

The farm shop is particularly dangerous if, like me, you cannot resist a good-looking brownie, scone or loaf of bread. It sells baked goods, local spirits and various artisanal products to take home.

Farm Club, Walks And Wholesome Extras

For anyone wanting more than eating and soaking in a bath, Tewinbury Farm has also launched Farm Club, a new wellness concept with a functional fitness gym, outdoor training, reformer Pilates, sauna and ice bath facilities. It makes the whole place feel less like a traditional country hotel and more like a modern countryside retreat.

Walks are another big part of the appeal. We followed one of the recommended routes through the fields and into Tewin village, stopping at the local pub for a pint before walking back through the countryside. It was simple, wholesome and exactly the kind of thing that makes a short break feel like an actual break. Welwyn Garden City is also nearby if you want a little wander before or after your stay, but honestly, once you are on the farm, there is not much need to leave.

Perfect For A Weekend Away

Tewinbury Farm is a clever one because it manages to suit lots of different stays without losing its identity. It is romantic enough for couples, easy enough for families, dog-friendly in parts, and relaxed enough that you do not feel like you need to dress up unless you want to. You could come for a full weekend, a night away, dinner, brunch, a wellness session or even just a countryside walk and something from the farm shop.

For Londoners in particular, it is a bit of a revelation. It gives you the feeling of being fully immersed in the countryside without the faff of getting properly away. Just a train, a quick cab, and suddenly you are in a robe by a lake, watching herons fly overhead, wondering whether it is too soon to run another bath.
