There’s something about October in London that makes you want to retreat indoors. The evenings are getting darker, temperatures are dropping, and suddenly the idea of spending a couple of hours submerged in warm water sounds far more appealing than another evening in the pub.
So, on a particularly chilly Tuesday evening, after a long day in the office, I headed to AIRE Ancient Baths for a visit that had been on my London wishlist for several years. Having spent time exploring traditional hammams and bathhouses in southern Spain, I’d been intrigued to see how the concept translated to London.
Interestingly, AIRE, too, has its roots in Spain. Founded in Seville in 2004, the brand draws inspiration from ancient Greek, Roman and Ottoman bathing traditions. Its London outpost opened in 2021, occupying the former home of J.M. Barrie, author of Peter Pan. Quite a fitting setting for somewhere that encourages you to forget about time altogether…
A Hidden Wellness Sanctuary in Central London
Tucked away on Robert Street, just off the Strand and moments from Embankment, you’d be forgiven for walking straight past AIRE. From the outside, there’s little to suggest that beneath this historic townhouse lies a network of candlelit thermal baths. Stepping inside, you’re welcomed into a softly lit lounge, where you can enjoy a warm cup of tea before being shown downstairs to the changing rooms.
And here’s something I particularly appreciated: you genuinely only need to bring your swimsuit. Having come straight from the office, the thought of carrying towels, toiletries and half my bathroom around London wasn’t particularly appealing. Thankfully, AIRE has it all covered.
Soft gowns, slippers and towels are provided, alongside L’Occitane toiletries, makeup remover, hairbrushes, hairdryers, straighteners and styling products. It’s a small detail, but one that makes an enormous difference.
With a phone-ban, silence encouraged and the changing rooms softly illuminated by chandeliers, you already feel a world away from London. And that’s before you’ve even stepped foot in the baths.

The Ancient Baths: A Thermal Journey Beneath London
Descending another level takes you to what AIRE is known for. Exposed brickwork, vaulted ceilings, flickering candles and the gentle sound of water create an atmosphere that feels intimate, calm and considered.
Unlike a conventional spa, AIRE revolves around a thermal bathing circuit, where you’re invited to move between different pools at a pace that feels right for you. These include the Tepidarium, heated to 36°C, the Caldarium at 40°C, and the Frigidarium, featuring two invigorating cold plunges at 14°C and 10°C. There’s also the Balneum, with its hydrotherapy jets, an aromatherapy steam room and the Flotarium, a saltwater pool designed to help you float effortlessly.

Guest numbers are carefully controlled, meaning the space never feels overwhelmingly busy. Visiting on a Tuesday evening, we even had several pools almost entirely to ourselves.
And with no clocks or phones, there’s no need to keep track of time. When your session ends, a gentle bell sounds throughout the baths. Until then, you’re free to completely switch off.
The Hydrating Honey Ritual: A Heavenly Treatment
Alongside the baths, we enjoyed AIRE’s Hydrating Honey Ritual, combining a 30-minute body massage with a nourishing honey hair mask in a warm, softly lit treatment room.
The massage itself was absolutely gorgeous. Starting with the legs, my therapist gradually worked through the body, focusing on the back, arms and shoulders, using long, flowing movements and firmer pressure where needed. The treatment finished with a wonderfully smelling honey hair mask and a soothing scalp massage.
I’d actually arrived feeling slightly congested, as though I was coming down with a cold, and whether it was the massage, the warmth or simply taking some time just for me, I came away feeling noticeably lighter.

Hot, Cold and Everything in Between
Back downstairs, we started in the Tepidarium, enjoying a gentle swim before moving into the Balneum, where underwater jets provided a lovely massage for our backs and shoulders.
We also treated ourselves to a glass of cava, an optional extra that I’d thoroughly recommend if you’re making an occasion of your visit.
Next, we braved the hot and cold contrast. The Caldarium, heated to 40°C, was wonderfully soothing, particularly on a chilly October evening, before we ventured into the Frigidarium. Now, I’m not averse to a cold plunge, but 10°C certainly wakes you up.
We spent around a minute in the cold water before returning to the warmth, repeating the process a couple of times. The contrast left me feeling wonderfully invigorated.
The Flotarium: The Art of Doing Absolutely Nothing
Of all the different baths, the Flotarium was undoubtedly my favourite, and definitely lived up to its name. Filled with highly concentrated saltwater, the pool allows your body to float almost effortlessly.
And there’s something incredibly comforting about that. I think it’s quite rare, particularly when you’re living and working in London, to find yourself somewhere you can completely let go, both physically and mentally.
Lying back in the water, with my ears submerged, I could hear the faint sound of music beneath the surface. Soft percussion, distant vocals and the gentle movement of water created an almost meditative atmosphere. There was nothing to do, nowhere to be and absolutely no reason to move.
We eventually finished with a gentle salt exfoliation beside the pool, and almost perfectly timed, the bell let us know our time at Aire had come to an end.
Does AIRE Ancient Baths Live Up To The Hype?
YES. And what impressed me most about AIRE was how thoughtfully everything had been put together. From the atmospheric lighting, attentive therapists to the smallest touches in the changing rooms, the whole experience feels super indulgent. And importantly, that attention to detail continues right through until you leave.
After a long, warm shower, washing out my honey hair mask and making use of the excellent toiletries, I stepped back outside feeling completely refreshed. No damp towels to carry, no wet hair to contend with, just a short walk to the Tube.
AIRE certainly isn’t your typical spa, but that’s why I loved it. Rather than somewhere to spend an entire day, it’s a unique opportunity to disconnect for a couple of hours. I’d happily recommend it for a date night, a catch-up with a friend or simply an indulgent evening to yourself. And with Christmas approaching, it would make a rather wonderful gift for someone who deserves a little treat.
