Getting all glammed up for dinner feels far more special these days than it used to! If you’re looking for a restaurant which you can really get dressed up for, you can eat, drink and dance at the glamorous Sumosan Twiga all under one roof.
Other than the velvet rope outside this super cool three floor establishment , you wouldn’t know Sumosan Twiga was there. This atmospheric, buzzy restaurant, bar, club and lounge hides in the shadows of Sloane Street, but once inside you’ll be amazed at how they manage to conceal this vibrant, stylish venue which is really something to shout about.
It’s the luxurious partnership between Italian F1 legend Flavio Briatore’s Billionaire Life portfolio and the sushi brand Sumosan that gives this restaurant it’s exclusive edge combined with a split style menu which offers up both Japanese cuisine and classic Italian dishes which work well in complementing each other if you fancy a bit of both.
Sumosan Twiga’s luxurious main dining room on the first floor is a beautiful wide open space, bright with natural light which accentuates the monochrome colour palette which is occasionally punctuated with gold and bronze. Mirrored walls, curated art works, studded leather seating, large round tables with crisp white cloths and a feature bar at one end of the room make this a modern stylish space that you made a special effort for!
The cocktail list and drinks menu is extensive and the mixologists are happy to mix you up something off piste if you’re after a particular concoction. The wine list also offers up a great range of wines and the waiters will gladly talk you through options and recommendations if you’re not sure what will pair nicely with your food choices.
We warm up with Japanese starters. Gigantic wasabi prawns combine that unmistakable kick with sweet notes of mango and passionfruit, while wagyu beef tacos give that luxurious high end flavour in mini taco style with a hint of sweet soy.
A special chef’s selection of California maki rolls from the sushi selection follow next. Perfectly executed by head chef Alessandro Scala (formerly of COYA), these little beauts sport a designer crunchy coating courtesy of the orange tobiko fish roe which give a gorgeous hint of smoky salty flavour. Packed with salmon and avocado, they’re a classic combo, but there’s no denying there’s something pretty special maki.
We move onto mains and half way through our delicious meal, the dining room really starts to come alive! The cool crowd descends, the buzz intensifies and the DJ gets on the decks. We switch over to the Italian menu at this point for an intensely luxurious buttery main of burrata and black truffle ravioli. There’s no scrimping on the truffle and the amount of depth and flavour as a result is delicious.
We devour the A4 Japanese Wagyu beef sirloin which follows. This ultra premium grade of beef is juicy and succulent and just the kind of quality we’ve come to expect from Sumosan Twiga.
Too full to order dessert, a fancy ice cream arriving at the next table sways our decision. We’re not disappointed as the edible sugar cage is broken into and the shards puncture glorious balls of flavoured ice cream which provide the perfect end to a luscious meal.
With both of us looking forward to 5am mid-week alarms the next day, we have to drag ourselves out of our seats as the real party gets underway. Next time we’ll be booking in late to see just what goes on after dark, plus from 31st August, there’ll be live music nights every Tuesday with acclaimed Irish born performer ‘Sarah and the Jazz Band’ between 6.45pm – 8.45pm to ease you into the vibe. Other upcoming regular events include sake tasting from September with the Board Director of the British Sake Association – Marie Cheong-Thong – a must for anyone who loves Japanese food and drink.
Sumosan Twiga also has a basement club and bar and lounge so you can really enjoy a full night of extravagance and exclusivity, while its menu of two halves really means you’re getting the best of both worlds.
