Luxe Bible can’t wait for Damien Hirst and Mark Hix’s a modern apothecary to launch on 23rd February which will combine food and art. Pharmacy 2 will open at Hirst’s own Newport Street Gallery in Vauxhall, offering up quality food and fresh ingredients to hungry creatives in a quirky, playful pharmacy themed setting.
The name is both a nod to a piece of Hirst’s own work – an installation piece from 1992 which was displayed at the Tate Modern and also as a tribute to the Hirst-designed Pharmacy Restaurant and Bar in Notting Hill which closed in 2003.
Dispensing dishes like soft white polenta with Burford Brown egg yolk and shaved Wiltshire truffles, along with Hix’s take on the traditional German ‘Heaven and Earth’, the restaurant will be open 10am – 12 midnight Tuesday to Saturday and 10am – 6pm on Sundays.
With 15 wines available by the glass along with champagnes and cocktails, you can expect some interesting concoctions like the quince-infused Fizz-Ness with Tanqueray London dry gin and the famous Hix Fix with morello cherry in Somerset apple eau de view topped with sparkling wine.
As well as exhibiting some of Hirst’s most iconic work within Pharmacy 2, including the Medicine Cabinets and butterfly Kaleidoscope paintings, you’ll also find DNA strands depicted on the glass windows along with a stainless steel and glass vitrine bar. Individually designed pills pop out of the leather banquettes and are embedded into the marble floor.
Newport Street Gallery which opened in October 2015, features a free exhibition of Damien Hirst’s personal art collection. You can also currently see paintings from John Hoyland (1934-2011) with his ‘Power Stations’ exhibition spanning all of Newport Street’s galleries until 3rd April 2016.
Something tells us that this new collaboration between Hix and Hirst could be dangerously addictive.
