Maria Alexander Spa Boat Review: London’s Private Floating Spa Experience

A luxury canal boat spa in London with a private hot tub, sauna, massage treatments, bubbles and total privacy on the water.

London is not short of spas, but the Maria Alexander Spa Boat is something else entirely. Currently moored around Limehouse Basin, this private floating spa brings together the polish of a luxury hotel treatment room, the intimacy of a private wellness retreat and the novelty of being on the water, all without having to leave the city.

For anyone searching for a luxury spa experience in London that feels genuinely different, Maria Alexander is a real find. Set aboard a beautifully designed canal boat, the experience includes private use of the hot tub, sauna, rain shower and relaxation space, with the option to add treatments, bubbles, herbal teas and refreshments.

A Private Spa Boat In London

Maria Alexander Spa Boat was created by founders Corvin and Ingrid, whose names inspired the Maria Alexander brand. Both come from a wellness background, and the concept was born from a simple but clever idea: Londoners needed something more personal than a hotel spa, more luxurious than a standard wellness day and easier than leaving the city for a countryside retreat.

The result is a private floating spa experience that feels beautifully curated from start to finish. Once on board, the space is exclusively yours. There are no shared changing rooms, no busy relaxation areas and no strangers drifting between the sauna and hot tub. It is just you, your guest and the team close by if needed, just the ring of a bell away.

First Impressions: A Hidden Wellness Escape On The Water

The experience starts with a warm welcome inside the boat’s reception area. Before entering the main spa space, the team talks through the session, checks for any allergies or treatment preferences and explains how to make the most of the facilities. It immediately feels calm, personal and considered.

From there, you are taken through to the main spa area, and that is where the whole concept really lands. It feels intimate without being cramped, polished without feeling too formal, and peaceful without losing that special sense of being somewhere unusual. You are very much still in London, but suddenly it feels like the city has been turned down a few notches.

Inside The Maria Alexander Spa Boat

One of the things that surprised me most was just how spacious and well thought-out the boat felt. Maria Alexander is set on a 70ft by 12ft custom-built widebeam canal boat, which explains why it feels far more like a proper private spa than a clever pop-up squeezed onto the water.

Inside, the design is warm, elegant and quietly luxurious. The brand describes it as Scandinavian style with Caribbean warmth, and that actually feels pretty spot on: clean and calming, but with enough softness that it never clinical.

There is a separate treatment room as you enter, plus a sauna, hot tub, rain shower, changing space and little areas to sit with drinks and nibbles, so the whole thing flows really naturally. Nothing feels like it has been crammed in for the sake of it. Every corner has been thought about, from the towels and lighting to the music and small details that make you feel instantly looked after.

The Ritual: Foot Soaks, Herbal Tea And Total Reset

Before the main treatment began, we were eased into the experience with herbal tea, light snacks and a foot soak. It is a small moment, but one that makes a real difference, especially after travelling across London. The foot scrub and soak gives you a chance to pause, breathe and properly transition out of city mode.

That is what Maria Alexander does so well. It does not just offer nice facilities; it creates a full sense of ritual. Everything is paced in a way that encourages you to slow down, whether that is taking a few minutes over tea, sitting quietly with your feet in warm water, or simply letting the sound of the canal replace the usual noise of London.

The Couples Massage Experience

We then moved into the treatment room for a 30-minute side-by-side massage. What made the treatment feel even more special was that Ingrid and Corvin delivered it themselves. It is rare to meet the founders of a wellness concept, rarer still to have them personally look after you, and it added a lovely layer of care to the whole experience.

The massage itself was excellent. Ingrid worked through my shoulders, back, ribs, legs and feet with exactly the right amount of pressure, easing out knots without making it feel overly intense. My body instantly felt lighter, and I was able to calm my mind easing into the gentle rocking of the boat.

Private Hot Tub, Sauna And Rain Shower

After the massage, we were left to enjoy the spa facilities privately. A glass of bubbles was brought in, the door was closed, and the boat became our own little wellness retreat.

The hot tub is one of the main highlights. There are different jet settings and seating positions, so you can adjust the experience to how you prefer. We opened the back door slightly and watched boats drift past, which added to the feeling of being tucked away in plain sight. It is such a simple thing, but there is something incredibly relaxing about sitting in warm water while the canal moves quietly around you.

The sauna is equally lovely. With sauna hats on, towels down and eucalyptus in the air, it has a proper Nordic feel. We created our own heat and cool-down circuit, moving between the sauna, cold rain shower, hot tub, drinks and snacks. There is also a little bell if you need anything, which means the team is close by without ever disrupting the privacy of the experience.

Why The Privacy Makes It Feel So Special

The real magic of Maria Alexander Spa Boat is the privacy. This is not a spa where you are sharing facilities, waiting for space in the sauna or trying to relax while other guests drift past. The whole boat is yours, which completely changes the energy of the experience.

You are not simply paying for a massage or spa access. You are paying for your own private spa in London, complete with hot tub, sauna, treatment space, refreshments and a genuinely personal level of service.

Best For Couples, Birthdays And Small Celebrations

Maria Alexander Spa Boat is especially well suited to couples. It would be perfect for an anniversary, romantic birthday surprise, Valentine’s Day, a proposal-adjacent treat or simply something special to do together in London that does not involve another dinner reservation.

That said, it would also work beautifully for close friends, birthdays, mother-daughter spa days or small celebrations. The sauna can fit up to four people.

There are plans to develop the experience further, potentially with added food elements such as afternoon tea or more substantial refreshments, but even in its current form, the offering already feels polished, memorable and very complete.

Getting To Maria Alexander Spa Boat

Maria Alexander Spa Boat is currently moored around Limehouse Basin, though guests should always check the latest location before visiting as the boat can move depending on where it is moored.

The current east London setting is part of the charm. Limehouse is not necessarily an area many Londoners visit often, but the marina is peaceful, pretty and surprisingly atmospheric, with beautiful boats moored nearby and a slower pace that makes the city feel much further away than it is.

The boat is easy to reach by DLR, with good connections from areas such as Canary Wharf, Bank, Tower Gateway and Stratford. The team also helps guide guests from the station, which makes the arrival feel smooth rather than stressful.

Is Maria Alexander Spa Boat Worth It?

For anyone looking for a luxury spa day in London that feels genuinely different, Maria Alexander Spa Boat is absolutely worth knowing about. It is calm, beautifully designed and personal in a way that many larger spas simply cannot be.

It is not the kind of place you book for a rushed treatment between meetings. It is the kind of place you book when you want to mark an occasion, impress someone, spend proper time with someone you love or simply escape London without actually leaving it.

We left feeling completely reset, which, on a boiling hot day in London, felt like a small miracle. Having experienced it in summer, it would be brilliant to return in winter too, when the heated floors, hot tub, sauna and cosy canal setting would make it feel even more magical.
