Luxe Bible has a new Scottish love! As a result we’re still thinking about the Dirty Buttery Mash at Mac and Wild which had us whipped into an eating frenzy, courtesy of The Wild Game Co. who’ve laid down their Scottish roots on Great Titchfield Street.
Of course, that’s not just what Mac and Wild are famous for. In the short time they’ve been open, they’ve caused quiet a stampede among game lovers who enjoy their venison straight from the highlands.
The restaurant is a quirky little find – butchers hooks hanging from the ceiling; the shelving, bar and tables (which sit stylishly and simply across two levels) are all made from a tree that fell on Andy Waugh’s father’s estate.
Among the gorgeous ‘wee’ starter plates are the totally de-lish haggis pops. Definitely worth a try and nothing like that rich and greasy mush you might’ve had before.
The venison chateaubriand is the ‘must eat’ at £11 per 100grams. If you’ve never eaten deer before, forget every pre-conception and you’ll most definitely devour the plate. Tender and delicious, it’s impossible to leave, as is that mash I mentioned earlier… Now that dish of deliciousness is produced from potatoes roasted in their skins, put through a ricer at least twice, buttered, creamed, seasoned and beaten into that luxurious consistency that will have you scraping the bowl (and asking for seconds). Sorry, I’m a little bit obsessed…
Then there’s the Venimoo – voted the best London burger this year. Beef or venison patty, served with bernaise, cheese and caramelised onion, all squeezed neatly in a brioche bun. Followed by dessert. The best take on a Tunnock’s teacake I’ve ever tasted.
And while all Mac and Wild’s produce comes from Ardgay and neighbouring estates and farms, their whisky collection covers the whole of Scotland. You can just imagine the copious amounts of night caps consumed by the team, which have resulted in the 50 or so bottles now resting behind the bar. We treated ourselves to a Balblair Highland single malt – guaranteed to put a few hairs on your chest. There’s also a range of bottled cocktails which have been created especially and ‘mixed by a man in a kilt’ – nice! Try a glass for £8 or a 500ml bottle for £70 which will serve 10.
After one too many neat ones, just watch out for Stu the Stag standing outside. He’s even got his own Twitter account. Bring on Burns Night!
