The Beach House is brand new to Whitley Bay occupying the old Cafe 19 right on the seafront with gorgeous views out across the beach.
Open all day for brekkie through to evening dinner, the brand new upstairs restaurants boasts a cool, relaxed vibe with a nautical theme – hanging straw palm shades bring definite vibes of the Med along with beautiful pendant feature lighting, along with a mix of wooden and mosaic tile tables and walls adorned with pampas fans. Of course, the climate in Whitley Bay is a little cooler than you’d expect in Southern Spain but then the beach is a pretty special one.
The menu includes a really lovely range of very generous-sized sides – our faves included the tender scallops with a slightly sweet mint pea purée and hearty black pudding, while the nachos absolutely hit the spot topped liberally with salsa, sour cream, guacamole and plenty of tasty pulled pork that melted in the mouth. The hamburger sliders almost felt full size with big juicy patties and plenty of filling, while the bread and olives (which doesn’t sound like the most exciting of dishes), was absolutely incredible. The bread, light as a feather soaked up the olive oil beautifully – more expensive olive oils exude flavour that you just don’t get from standard supermarket bottles and you could tell this was a good one!
We ate solely from the sides menu, but mains included a very good looking fish and chips (the table next to us provided some food envy for sure!), as well as a great choice of salads including seared halloumi and avocado, chicken caesar and pear and walnut. Seabass, veggie skewers and seafood linguine also caught my eye and will probably be ordered on a future visit!
New chef David Blaney (formerly of Hugo’s on the Quayside), has created the new seasonal menu featuring old favourites like the ‘Full English’ along with the new sharing platters and all ingredients are locally-sourced.
Offering all drinks ranging from Cullercoats Coffee to cocktails, draft beers and a great selection of wines, there’s also a new pavement cafe on the opposite side of the road overlooking the sea, in addition to the existing terrace. The Beach House is open Thursday to Saturday 8.30am – 9pm and Sunday 8.30am – 7pm. A definite must-visit at the coast this summer.
