You don’t have to travel out of town for those alfresco countryside vibes! Rather, travel in to town and you’ll discover a hidden sanctuary just off Regent Street – The Wigmore Summer Terrace and Garden.
If you’ve visited in the past, then you’re in for a pleasant surprise! The Wigmore Terrace has coupled up with The Langham Hotel’s courtyard garden for a cosy match made in heaven which is huge!
The perfect spot to meet up with friends, family or a date, this gorgeous oasis is an enclosure of pretty greenery. Climbing plants creep up and down the pergolas showing off flashes of fushia pink amongst the foliage. Heat lamps blend into the background – both freestanding and overhead the big round tables. There’s covered areas too, so should you become victim to the British weather, there’s somewhere to dive under, and what’s more, with drinks from Artesian, and food from the legendary Michel Roux Jr, you can’t really go far wrong!
This ‘modern British pub’ offers up seriously good food. Don’t let the casual concept fool you because the dishes on the menu are of a seriously amazing standard. We’re talking spiky Masala spiced Scotch-egg with Dahl relish that’s spent a whole lot of time getting that unique blend of ingredients right for its warming depth of flavour. But if there’s one thing you have to order while you’re here, it’s the XXL stovetop 3 cheese and mustard toastie, which will you leave you wondering whether you’ll ever taste ANYTHING this good again?! If you’re trying (or failing) to re-create this one at home, surely the key has got to be more cheese than you ever thought it possible to eat in one sitting. Seriously incredible stuff.
Already over the edge with excitement at the prospect of more food that tastes this awesome, the mains did not disappoint. My ham hock pie had a crust that Michel Roux Jr would be seriously impressed with (he’s trained his staff verrrrry well.) Oozing with chunks of luscious ham in a rich sauce and a green champ, this was definitely a one for garlic lovers! My friend had the buttered lobster roll with buttermilk onion rings the size of inflatable rubber rings – something both of us had never had before. Impressively presented, it was love from the first bite – a light fun bite to eat with a luxurious feel.
Drinks, (as you’d expect from one of World’s 50 Best Bars) are the finest. Of course you can’t beat a Sancerre in the sunshine (AlaÏn Girard and Fils) or a London Calling – Hendricks Gin, Fino Sherry, Lemon Juice, Orange Bitters, London Essence Grapefruit & Rosemary tonic. There are at least four ingredients in every glass – showcasing the true art of mixology and the range of flavours you can produce. Don’t fancy a cocktail? Kegs, bottles, cans, hard seltzers and gins are all on offer too.
The Wigmore Summer Terrace and Garden is a must-visit on a sunny day, but even at night, its twinkly lights and heaters provide the cosy vibes. Open Wednesdays – Sundays, book here, now.
