Terry Laybourne’s 21 is the flagship restaurant of the 21 Hospitality Group – a re-imagining of the original Cafe 21 which opened on Queen Street in 1988 and re-located to Trinity Gardens on Newcastle’s Quayside in the mid 2000’s.
The award-winning restaurant has a prestigious reputation and always appears on the lists of Newcastle’s finest eateries.
What’s more, 21 offers a fixed priced menu which is brilliant value for those who want to enjoy incredible food at a great price. Take advantage of the special early bird menu which offers up two courses for just £28.00 and three courses for £34.00.
There’s a good selection of dishes available including a beautiful fresh, light and zingy sea bass ceviche starter with ripe Isle of Wight tomatoes and crunchy plantain chips, as well as the chunky, meaty terrine of middle white pork and pistachio nuts with a rich whole grain mustard and delightful contrasting textures. Of course, you can still order extras from the a la carte and we can never resist the divine cheese soufflé which is light, fluffy and swimming in an outrageous amount of gooey cheese.
Star of the mains was the braised shoulder of beef with grelot onions and a red wine sauce packed with flavour. Melt-in-the-mouth as it should be, you get a good amount of meat, served with creamy mash and carrots on the side. Hearty and delicious.
We enjoyed a lovely light chocolate and hazelnut mousse to finish with juicy tangy raspberries to cut through the sweetness, complete with a tiny gold leaf decoration to remind you that this is good simple food, elevated.
The warm interiors are calming and stylish with red lighting setting the mood along with comfy chairs and contrasting bright white table cloths. The destination bar area and welcome area has plenty of seating for a pre or post drink and we can recommend their range of Sparkling cocktails from Kir Royale to French 75. Or, go classic as we did with the Champagne Cocktail – a concoction of Taittinger Brut Reserve, Maxime Trijol Vs, Angostura Bitters and Sugar.
A Vodka Martini nightcap was the icing on the cake – who can resist when you can choose Chase vodka which is my absolute favourite?! A gigantic olive, a touch of brine and a splash of Noilly Prat French Vermouth were the perfect combo.
Take full advantage of the Fixed Price Menu at 21 – Tuesday to Friday 12:00pm – 2:30pm and 5:30pm – 9:00pm and Saturday 12:00pm – 2:30pm and 5:30pm – 6:30pm
