‘There’s no place like Hjem’ Hjem have taken up residency in the heart of the Beamish Valley for a 6 month pop-up in South Causey’s Farmhouse. It’s a gorgeous setting for an incredible tasting menu that takes you through fresh Northern ingredients with Scandinavian suavity. This clean cuisine with a focus on fresh fish and root veg is elevated by Hjem with tasty twists on each dish. And ‘fresh’ is most definitely the focus here. You’ll be eating vegetables that have literally been pulled from the ground on the same day, or fish that has been plucked from the freezing North Sea just hours before. With Hjem’s ten course tasting menu priced at £105 and a three course special menu for £60, there is Michelin star magic at work at here, so like us, you’ll probably want to experience as many courses as you can with the full works. Flat Iron opening Newcastle (Photo Credit: @justindesouza.photo) The legendary Flat Iron steak of London and Manchester fame is coming to Newcastle in the Spring and will occupy the former Co-op building on Grey Street in a 19th Century Grade II building. If you’ve never eaten their steaks before, you’re in for a real treat. This no nonsense brand know their meats inside out and while the menu is small, it is perfectly formed. Grab a glass of Malbec (specially blended by the Flat Iron team using grapes grown in the Limoux area in southern France) and be sure to order sides of beef dripping chips, crispy bone marrow garlic mash and truffled mac ‘n’ cheese, as well as the green chilli cheeseburger. Flat Iron refers to the often overlooked featherblade cut known for its juiciness and flavour. It’s affordable and extremely tasty and comes from their very own herd of Wagyu cattle in Thirsk.
